A 7-day trekking trip in the Simien Mountains National Park allows for a balanced exploration of the diverse terrain and wildlife. It typically includes days of hiking, acclimatization, and wildlife viewing, with the opportunity to ascend some of the highest peaks like Ras Dashen. The trip usually starts with a flight to Gondar, followed by a drive to the park, then trekking through various landscapes before returning to Gondar.

Over Night: On selected camp sites with a well equipped camping gear.

Our 7-day Simien Mountains trekking offers breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and a challenging yet rewarding hiking experience. Here’s a general outline of what you can expect:

Highlights of the Trek

  • Stunning views of the Simien Mountains National Park.
  • You will have the opportunity to interact with various wildlife species, including Gelada baboons, Walia Ibex, and potentially the Ethiopian wolf.
  • Trekking through valleys and escarpments and reaching peaks like Ras Dashen (4,620m), Ethiopia’s highest mountain.
  • Camping under the stars in remote locations.

 

Itinerary

Day 1:Fly Addis Ababa to Gondar

  • Then proceed to start the simien mountains trekking to the first camp site Sankaber.
  • Our representative meets and picks you from Gondar airport and drive to Debark- Sankaber (3250 m); the first campsite.
  • In Sankaber you will have a short walk inside the park to see chilada baboon and Ethiopian redfox. Camping

Day 2: Trek Sankaber to  Gich (3600 m)

  • The first serious day of trekking starts from the beautiful situated campsite of Sankaber.
  • The trek follows the spectacular escarpment.
  •  You will encounter gelada baboons and the stunning viewpoint at the Jinbar Falls.
  • Late afternoon passes through the village of Gich where the local people prepare a well deserved coffee for us.
  • Our camp for the night is at Gich.

Day 3: Trek Gich – Chennek (3620 m)

  • This is probably the most spectacular stage of the whole trekking, offering stunning views all the way.
  •   Walk for almost 8 hours to cover 12 km, including a short detour to Imet Gogo (3925 m). This summit offers the most exciting views.
  •   You will see the  lammergeyer and the endemic thick billed raven.
  •    On our way to Chennek we will pass thrugh some of the major peaks (Inataye reaching 4070 meter) and a deep valley.
  •   Chennek is abundant with the endemic plant giant lobelia and the best place to spot the endemic and endangered walia ibex.
  • Night in Chenek Camp site.

Day 4: Trek Chennek – Ambiko (3200 m)

  •   Today is for sure the most challenging trekking day.
  •  The first hike is up to Bwahit Pass (4200 m) and later reach the bottom of the valley of the Mesheha River (2800 m) before we reach Ambiko.
  •   Here up on weather permitting we will be rewarded with at least the first glimpse of Ras Dashen (4533 m).Here ib Bwahitras you will find the Ethiopian wolf. Sleep early as we start tomorrow well before sunrise. Camping

Day 5: Trek and walk around Ambiko

  •   Reaching at the roof top of Ethiopia is the goal for this day trek to Ras Dashen (4533 m) is roughly a mere 5 hours/ 8 km away, it’s all the way up to the top.
  •   The view from to top might not be as stunning as at other places in Simien (Imet Gogo) but you made it! Yes! Walking back to Ambiko takes about 3-5 hours.
  • Camp at Ambiko

Day 6: Trek back Ambiko – Chenek

  •   Today we will heading back into known area the easiest way is to walk about 4 hours to the village of Chiro Leba where a 4WD vehicle can pick you and drive you out to the town of Debark. But you came to enjoy the Simien Mountains, right? Then this day we continue to Chennek and pitch our tents again in between the giant lobelia’s.

Day 7: Back from Chenek – Gondar

  •   Drive from Chenek to Gonder as soon as you get ready to leave, it takes about five hours driving via Debark till Gondar.
  • Overnight in Hotel.
  • This is the end of the hiking program in the Simien Mountains; tomorrow you can continue your journey through fascinating Ethiopia or depart from Gondar.
